This recurring series of posts on what we find in the marketplace is all about what’s new, different, and FLAVORFUL!

We love finding new treasures in grocery stores – seeing new product launches in every aisle inspires us and we hope they do the same for you. While it’s great to see these new products, it’s also good to know if it tastes GOOD. No one wants to spend $3 for a granola bar that tastes like chalk (you totally know what we are talking about).

This month, we are focusing on better-for-you snacking. January and February seem to be popular months for gym memberships, New Year’s resolutions, and other things self-improvement related. That said, we found many newer items that seemed incredibly interesting from a flavor standpoint. Check them out below!

Wallaby Organic Aussie Crème Yogurt (Strawberry Red Wine)

I saw this on the shelf, and thought ‘Red wine. Interesting!’ Many yogurt companies are attempting to extend yogurt snacking to an afternoon occasion, and flavor can be a great way to do this. Our team of tasters thought it tasted like a ‘sweet, floral strawberry’, and that it was sweeter than originally expected. They also thought the wine flavor gave the yogurt a premium feel.

Not to mention, every time I thought of the yogurt I wanted to start singing Deana Carter’s country ballad ‘Strawberry Wine.’ Doo-doo-dee-doo.

Dang Keto Bars

I have been on my fair share of lo-carb diets, keto being one, and I can tell you from personal experience that there is a lack of snack foods for the lo-carb dieter on the go. Traveling while on keto can be really difficult. So when I saw these on a crowdfunding site this winter, I was SO excited.

  • Lemon Matcha: If you like lemon bars (and really, who doesn’t?) then you are in luck. This is DELISH and our favorite of the 3 flavor varieties.
  • Chocolate Sea Salt: While the idea of this made me super excited, the bar did not deliver on flavor. Perhaps because of the keto claim and lack of sugar. However, it did taste better than many of the keto-friendly bars I’ve had in the past.
  • Almond Vanilla: This was our second favorite and truly tasted decadent. We loved the coconut and vanilla notes, and it tasted incredibly creamy. It’s also worth mentioning that these bars are incredibly filling! Just breaking off a little taste satisfied our hunger.

Overall we were so impressed with these bars. If on a low sugar/low carb diet, these are downright decadent and satisfying. #crazyforketo

Effi Foods Probiotic Chickpea Granola (Gentle Pecan flavor)

This product had me incredibly curious, with a tagline “Bye, bye, hummus! Hello Granola!”

Placed in the middle of the cereal aisle amongst sugar-laden granolas, this is a definite departure chock full of non-dairy probiotics and sacha inchi. What is sacha inchi you might ask? Well, these Incan peanuts are commonly referred to as a super-superfood. They are loaded with omega fatty acids, protein, fiber and antioxidants.

We were also super curious about the gentle pecan flavor. Would it be savory with these chickpeas? Well, our team of tasters was SO impressed! It truly did have a gentle pecan flavor, with a peanuty and sunflower seed note. This granola would be absolutely delicious with yogurt.

Sacha inchi, we like you!

Daytime /Afternoon / Savory Snacking

Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips (Fuego flavor)

It has been incredibly interesting to see this brand blossom. Siete has some grain-free tortillas and was one of the first companies to venture into the grain-free snacking zone. What initially was a single company in the grocery store has grown into a snacking aisle loaded with grain-free alternatives: cassava flour, beans, avocados, dried vegetables, etc.

The fuego flavor can be described as heat, with a little savory hit at the end. The ingredients were also incredibly interesting: beet powder, coconut milk powder. A great alternative for someone who wants a savory, crunchy snack, that tastes like a spicy nacho cheesy chip.

Wilde Brand Thin and Crispy Chicken Chips (Jalapeno Flavor)

Another example of the aforementioned alternative-snacking growth in the chip aisle is the meat-based snacks, and I’m not talking jerky. The pork rind selections have expanded exponentially in the last few years. So I was super excited to see ‘Chicken Chips’, made with chicken and tapioca flour.

Flavor bomb alert! Wow! These guys pack a serious punch! Our team of tasters seemed to be divided on whether they liked or disliked these. Maybe it was the strong chicken note. I personally love the crispy chicken skin one might find on something like a rotisserie chicken, so these, for me, were delicious. Either way, they were crispy, super savory, and spicy with the jalapeno.

From the Ground Up Cauliflower Pretzels (Original Flavor)

Cauliflower forever!! I personally feel that cauliflower rice is the best thing ever – especially with some incredibly flavorful toppings. So when I see new cauliflower products, I’m always curious to see if they deliver on taste and texture.

Our team of tasters described these as ‘strange.’ We were thinking that these would taste just like pretzels, but you get a strong smell and taste of cauliflower throughout the bite. These are also made with cassava flour, so they are not necessarily lo-carb, but they are gluten-free and vegan and the ingredient list touts lots of powderized vegetables. Finally, from a texture standpoint, these were super crunchy and look just like your average pretzels.

Stay tuned for next month’s version of Flavor Finds, where we venture into the dairy aisle for non-dairy products. See you soon! – Mary
