The Summer of 2022 has really gone by in a flash! I’ve enjoyed this season immensely. It’s been full of so many fun, outdoor activities, and concerts that involve cold drinks and sweet treats. Yum! Although COVID-19 is still hanging around in our lives, summer activities largely returned to normal, especially compared with the last couple of summers, allowing people to have a fun time.
I’m a big fan of an ice-cold smoothie and although there are many smoothie shop chains in North America, I prefer to get my smoothies from my local Mariano’s Grocery store. Their top seller, and my favorite, is the Tropical Green Detox. On the menu, they tout the use of “hand-selected produce with no ice or fillers” to make their all-natural juices and smoothies. You can start your day off right with a healthy blast of fruits and vegetables in the morning, but I have to admit that I order a smoothie from my local grocer any time of the day or night.
Why? It’s a great way to consume more veggies. Smoothies many times get a bad rap because of the sugar content from fruit. I purposely go after the smoothies made with the super green vegetables; the Mighty Leafy Greens like Spinach and Kale. The leafy greens are known to help detoxify the liver and provide much-needed vitamins and minerals. 68% of consumers love or like Spinach. (Datassential 2022) and Kale is in the Top 10 of foods expected likely to offer a benefit (Givaudan Wellness Benefits Primary Research 2020). These healthful benefits include antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, boosting immune function, lowering blood pressure, and promoting eye health.
At Givaudan, we use our nutrient-dense and functional, plant-based ingredients in a variety of beverages. This month, we highlight the exceptional benefits of the dark leafy greens, cucumber and celery which are all the rage right now with consumers. They are minimally processed into juice ingredients that are ready for your natural beverage creations. According to one of our Proprietary Functional Studies, 62% of consumers believe that juice can offer health and wellness benefits with Kale, Cucumber, and Spinach having the highest growth of use in non-alcoholic beverages
The more thoughtful movement towards consuming more vegetables I presume is here to stay. As we approach the last few weeks of summer and take advantage of the hot weather, we all need to stay hydrated. Why not hydrate with the refreshing beverage of your choice while thinking of ways to get these super green veggies consumed at the same time? There has been a 9% increase in new beverage launches with Cucumber, and an 80% increase in new beverage launches with celery (Mintel 2022).
