How we can help you adjust with FDA’s Phase II sodium reduction guidelines

Nov 20, 2024MarketBites, Savory

As we analyze consumer insight on sodium consumption levels, explore how our TasteSolutions® can help you maintain flavor while meeting these new regulations.

In August, the FDA announced draft guidelines as part of their ongoing effort to reduce sodium intake in the American diet to an average of 2,300 mg per day. Currently, Americans consume about 3,400 mg of sodium daily, which is 47% above the recommended limit. Notably, 70% of this sodium is added during food processing, rather than being naturally present in raw ingredients.

The FDA’s focus is primarily on retail processed and packaged foods, while foodservice establishments have not yet been specifically addressed. This is an important moment for manufacturers to voice their opinions on the timing, overall impact, and sodium levels communicated to the industry. The FDA has extended the deadline for feedback, giving you an opportunity to share your insights.

At Givaudan, we believe that reducing sodium shouldn’t mean compromising on taste. As your trusted TasteSolutions® provider, we are committed to helping you maintain flavor while meeting these new guidelines. Our Consumer Understanding team recently surveyed 200 salt-aware U.S. consumers to explore their behaviors and motivations regarding five savory and snack product categories. The insights gained can help you navigate this changing landscape. Discover how our TasteSolutions® product lines—Saltiness, Umami, Richness, and Freshness—can enhance taste and keep consumers coming back for more.
